May 1: Opening Day
The Museum Complex will be open seven days a week through October. Hours will be the same as in the past: Monday – Sunday, 11am to 4pm and Sunday, 1pm to 5pm.
May 7: Annual Meeting
The entire community is invited to the program, “Madison County in World War I” by historian Darrek Orick who has visited our museum in the past for his World War I research. Members of the Madison County Historical Society will then hold their annual business meeting.
June 6: Heritage of The Hill and C.R.I.S.P. Fundraiser
The Madison County Historical Society would like to give back to our community by holding a fundraising event for C.R.I.S.P. (Community Resources In Service to People). Ten buildings on the Hill will be open for viewing along with a guide at each to tell you a bit of its history. All free-will donations will go directly to C.R.I.S.P., who will be on hand providing cookies and beverages.
June 20 & July 6: Community Band Concerts
Once again, the Winterset Community Band will grace The Hill with their melodies on two Thursday evenings at 7pm. Supper can be purchased prior to the concerts, provided by a local civic group.
July 11: Days Gone By
Wouldn’t it be fun to spend a summer evening just as the Bevington family once did? Tour their mansion, play a parlor game, or try your hand at badminton, croquette, or bocce ball on the hillside from 6pm to 7:30pm with cookies and lemonade. Feel free to bring your own blanket and basket supper starting at 5pm to enjoy a picnic on the mansion grounds. Hosts will be on-hand in period dress to lead the activities and tell you more about the Bevingtons and their times.
July 21-22: Barn Sale
The popular annual “garage” sale in the McKee Barn returns with all kinds of goodies for your home or interests at very reasonable prices. We will be looking for your donations starting in early July. All proceeds fund Passport to the Past activities on the Hill during the Covered Bridge Festival.
July 29: Fun in the Sun Car Show
This year marks the sixth Fun in the Sun Car Show on The Hill. We continue to work with Central Iowa Auto Club (CIA) to make this event a success! This year if you preregister before June 30, you get a FREE t-shirt. All proceeds fund Passport to the Past activities on the Hill during the Covered Bridge Festival.
August 11: Movie Night on The Hill
Last year’s successful Movie Night, showing “Night at the Museum” (of course), means that we need to do it again! This year’s film is yet to be chosen, but plan to bring the family as it will start approximately 8:30. We plan to have a food truck. winery, and theater, popcorn and candy available. Bring your own blankets or chairs to enjoy both the movie and the view from The Hill.
September 23: Museum Day Live! on The Hill
In conjunction with the Smithsonian Institute’s FREE admission day, all the buildings and history on The Hill will be available at no charge. Come on your own or bring a group.
October 14-15: Passport to the Past
The Hill will be alive with activities during the forty-eighth Annual Covered Bridge Festival: county school sessions, free wagon rides, old time weaving and whittling demonstrations, blacksmithing, Civil War reenactments, plus s’mores and more.
